Ford using liquid battery coolant in electric cars

Bloomberg BusinessWeek -- Ford says its Focus Electric compact car, which comes out late next year, will use cooled and heated liquid instead of air to regulate the temperature of its lithium-ion battery.

It's the same liquid-based technology that General Motors is using for the battery in its Chevrolet Volt electric car, which is scheduled to go on sale in November. Compact Power Inc., a subsidiary of Korean battery maker LG Chem, is making the batteries for both automakers.

The Nissan Leaf, an electric car set to debut in December, uses an air-cooled lithium-ion battery.

Ford says liquid systems are more effective than air ones at regulating battery temperatures. But the Leaf has matched the Volt's eight-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty.

I always wondered how they kept those batteries cool. Do they use the heat produced to heat the car in the winter?

Johnson Controls can probably make the batteries, but not at a price that the sharp-penciled accountants would like to pay.

I don't think it is that they can't, it is the price.

It should reduce Michigan unemployment rate a little bit by building those there.

There are many things NOT made in America. We're transferring the technology faster than you can blink your eye. Last seen on the WSJ two days ago, no American company can make the glass panels for a building in the USA. The only company that can make it is China!

Interesting that an American company can't make the batteries.
